We’re having some buttons made up by the fabulous Kelly of Pretty Ugly zine and ButtonBrat.com fame. But I’m having a mental blank at catchy slogans we can put on them.
So far we have:
- lip is what a feminist reads
Any more ideas? Comment here or email me

So, I mentored at the Y2Y career workshop on Thursday. It was good, but my only criticism is that it was too short. Maybe there were other workshop activities held throughout the day, and our bit was just for the 2 hours, but I would have liked more time talking to the girls about lip and publishing careers, and I think they would have liked a bit more time to ask me stuff.
Still, I’ve have 2 out of 2 positive experiences at these things, and look forward to more opportunities to do it again. The only thing I’ve got to sort out is my nerves at talking in front of large groups of people. They’re not butterflies in my tummy - they’re massive-huge bogon moths bashing about in there - making me talk faster than my lips can keep up with, just to get it over with.
Does anyone know of good ways to deal with pre-public speaking nerves?

As usual, I’m behind schedule with posting my news on the blog. A whole week behind. Life gets in the way, but sometimes it’s better that way.
Last Wednesday I mentored at a GirlSavvy workshop, held in Yass, along with a wonderful group of other professional women of various careers and lifestyles. After much trepidation, I told myself “Just go with it”, and it turned out to be a lot of fun and very worthwhile.
I was fortunate that the girls at my table were excited to be there, very outgoing and curious, and happy to participate. One of the other young mentors was not so fortunate. She got the “too cool for school” girls who really didn’t want to be there, making long silences and group activities very hard to get through. I guess they warmed up to her later though, as everyone was smiling and laughing by the end of the day. Still, not an envious position to be in.
What the girls got most out of the day, I think, is the assurance that they can do and be anything they want. One girl’s career goal was to be a receptionist. Now, not everyone has to be ambitious, career-focused or cure cancer, but hopefully she is more aware of the options available to her, and that certain lifestyles just aren’t achievable on a receptionist’s salary. We did an activity on budgeting, and I think some of the girls got a rude shock!
I got a lot out of the day too. I was reminded of what it was like being a teenager (not that long ago, but adult life and the day-to-day grind puts a filter over those memories). I learned that town girls are not much different to city girls. And that not all teenage girls are teeny-boppers (I was never one of those. shudder). They can be just as mature and intelligent as many adult women I know, with as much ambition, enthusiasm and confidence. I’m also excited to be able to take one of them on for work experience at the end of the year. Watch this space.
So, I’m doing it all again next week. Youth 2 Youth is running a similar workshop—though not a whole day—so it will be interesting to see how this one goes.

The day was a great success. It was great to see such a variety of people turn up. Entertainment ranged from artists to activists, including speakers, poets, tribal music and dancing and an all girl hip-hop collective called ladies love hip-hop. There was also a charity art auction, with proceeds going to the tsunami appeal. And of course Kelly and Erin from the Pretty Ugly Collective, and myself were there selling badges, t-shirts mags and zines.
To everyone who made it on the day, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Also for anyone who expressed interest in lip and has found their way here, be sure to leave a note or email.

Melbourne weather is being obnoxious as always. I’m hoping it dies down a bit in time for the International Women’s Day fair tomorrow.
I really hope it all goes to plan as I’m looking forward to helping out with the stall and also looking meeting some of the faces behind the ‘pretty ugly’ zine. (I nearly wrote ‘the pretty ugly girls’ but that could be taken the wrong way)
If anyone’s interested there’s a number of events happening around the country tomorrow and this week which you can find out about at http://www.internationalwomensday.com/
Or if by chance you happen to be in Melbourne tomorrow or if you just want to find out about what’s on the program that info is here.
Should be a good day if the sun comes out. I’ll take an umbrella just in case.

Hi all,
To continue on a coffee theme… I couldn’t turn the hot water tap on in the shower on this morning. It had been dripping so Allan turned it off really, really tight. Any other time but before 10.00am I would have fought with it until my strength overcame the tap tightness, but being I just got up, I couldn’t muster the energy. So, I went showerless and had time for a morning cup of coffee, something I almost never have.
So, I had my coffee and then made my way to the bus stop, where I sat next to this dreadlocked, cute young women that I’d seen at the bus stop once or twice before. I decided to talk to her. And proceeded to chat her head off while we were waiting for the bus and on the bus as well. I told her about lip, talked about work and all sorts of stuff. I did ask her about herself as well and found out she was studying geology at ANU and had worked as a road builder over the summer.
Anyway, half the time I’m thinking to myself, “Rachel, you probably should shut up, this poor girl doesn’t know you”, aware that I was probably being wierd. But the coffee had me in this perky, chatty mood. I’m never like that in the morning and have trouble talking at all. It’s so funny what coffee can do.
I hope I didn’t freak her out. I want her to write an article for lip about being the only girl on a road-building team!
See ya!
