Walking through your local shopping mall, you may have noticed in the windows of teen fashion stores, or on the bodies of the teenage girls shopping there, t-shirts emblazoned with slogans implying sexual favours the wearer may perform on some “lucky” young man (or woman).
This is not the least of what is currently termed “raunch culture” sweeping mass culture, both in America and here at home. Read the review of Arial Levy’s book Female Chauvinist Pigs or listen to Wednesday’s Hack program on Triple J**, and you will learn just how raunchy girls are becoming, claiming it is all in the name of sexual empowerment.
Rather than re-hash the issue - I think the above links cover it pretty well, especially as I haven’t yet read the book - I’d like to share some of the t-shirt slogans I’ve seen lately:
“Make me happy, take me shopping”
“It’s not cheating if we don’t get caught”
“Kiss me, my boyfriend’s at home”
If you have seen some slogans that have surprised, shocked or disturbed you and you’d like to share here, post them in the comments…
** In case they don’t upload the segment on the Triple J website, you can download the whole thing in mp3 format here (warning: file is 12mb)

TINA was soooo much fun! We met a bunch of great new people, and caught up with some familiar others, and I think I indulged a little too much, but that’s what you’re supposed to do at these things, right?
Here come the photos…

Erin and Aron and ginger beer at the Festival Club.

Window display at the “Stuffed” toy exhibit.

Skeleton hosting a tea party.

Rachel at the TINA zine fair.

Aron and Erin at the zine fair.

In between panels and parties, we actually made it to the beach. Bliss.

Last night bedtime was full on for me. My brain was still in overdrive from TINA so last night I called Paul, who has just finished his PhD thesis, to congratulate him, yes, but also to keep talking because I couldn’t seem to go cold turkey. We had a somewhat frustrating discussion about doing PhDs, as I’m trying to figure out the process for going back to uni to do one. I also checked my email to find out that this guy I have a huge thing for emailed me from VIC to apologise for not being in touch since he left Canberra in June (and indeed for a long time before that). And I’m premenstrual, which means my body wants an endless supply of orgasms. So I was in bed head-writing a disseration on the potential purpose of my future PhD, a reply email to VIC and this blog. Then Allan gave me an orgasm so I could drift off to sleep. But, I thought, this morning I would actually get up and write the blog, email and some paragraphs on the PhD thing, so all that “writing” doesn’t disappear like it usually does the morning after.
Oh, and, hooray for TINA!! It was awesome!
