These come from trees

Check out this blog: an experiment in environmentalism, viral marketing, and user interface design with the goal of reducing consumer waste paper!

Incidentally, I found this blog only minutes after a heated debate with my coworkers about office recycling. Bureaucratic contracts prevent effective recycling in my workplace, allowing only white printer paper to be placed in the recycle bins we have. Cardboard, soft drink cans and other recyclable waste can only be disposed of in regular garbage; however, there are some staff members conscientious enough to take their recyclables home.

I wanted to “acquire” a proper wheelie bin, like the ones we have at home… problem with that idea is that no one will come and empty it. It’s “not in the contract”, and the regular garbos don’t come to my office complex. But apparently they’re looking into “trialling” a new system. It’s a start.

So, the only interim solution (which hopefully will evolve into a long-term one) is to reduce what we use to begin with. We all talk of the “paperless office” - let’s actually try to implement one! I know a few great places for this sticker in my office space…

Sampler Column #4: Gifts Define

It’s going to be hard to part with last week’s cuuute Chick Notes, but I’m sure they’ll be put to good use by Lauren, our lucky week 3 Sampler blog comp winner.

Just as cute is this Ladybugs Hairclip, courtesy of Gifts Define. To quote from their website:

“INdollGENCES” is the popular nickname of our mini doll & accessories creations at Gifts define (from indulgence as they please, they pamper, they amuse). Each creation is a fruit of skillful, meticulous and highly creative artisans who really care of what they make.

To win, send an email to michelle@lipmag.com and tell us what “bugs” you about hair product advertising. Responses will be posted in the comments; email addresses are kept to myself.

Is ugly the new beautiful?

I was watching Sunrise this morning and there was a segment on the relatively new TV show ‘Ugly Betty’ which had sparked the question ‘is ugly the new beautiful?’
This ‘Betty’ character - who is supposedly ugly, with her glasses, mouth full of braces and who is a bit of a klutz - is apparently sending out the message that you don’t need to be beautiful to land a great job, that beauty is about more than how you look.
The first thing I noticed, was that the actress portraying this character really wasn’t ugly at all - it was just that they had attempted to uglify her (sterotypically) with glasses, braces and a different sense of dress style…
Just wondering what kind of message does this send out to impressionable young people who wear glasses and braces - people who probably already feel self-conscious enough as it is…???

Sampler Column #3: Nu Chick

It didn’t dawn on me until last night that week 2’s Sampler comp closed on Valentine’s Day… and our featured crafter was Valentina Design. Purely coincidental I assure you. The lucky winner is Lily, and her Maltese Terrier.

This week we have up for grabs this adorable note sheet set from Nu Chick. Stylish and fun for jotting a little note to a friend or to yourself.

To win, tell us when was the last time you sent a handwritten note to someone, and what did it say? Email your response to michelle@lipmag.com by Wed 21 Feb. (The usual publishing and privacy rules apply)

Sampler Column #2: Valentina Design

First up - congratulations to Jenny on winning the gorgeous Heyday crocheted earrings from our first Sampler comp.

This week we feature Valentina Design - original handmade necklaces and jewellery.

Her Asian, Tribal and Extravaganza designs are unique and make use of glass beads, gemstones, wood, shyntetics materials, silver beads and silk cords, tied with Chinese knots.

You can win this wooden beaded necklace by emailing michelle@lipmag.com and telling us what ties you up in knots.

lights out

I received this email the other day, which is interesting timing as I’m planning to move onto a 10 acre bush block outside town and build my own house in the near future. So I’ve been looking at self-sustainable options, such as solar power and using recycled materials. But the links in this email give tips to being more green now! I’ve already switched to ActewAGL’s Green Choice, but there’s still so much I can do!

“I always thought i was quite a environmental conscience person but after watching Al Gore’s (who has been nominated for a Nobel Prize) inconvenient truth it is obvious i am not doing enough - everyone needs to watch this movie!!! (http://www.climatecrisis.net) we all need to be doing more to help our planet turn its self around.

Soooo here are some websites… I am going to change our house into green energy it is so easy and if everyone does it will help the environment heaps!!!! (and maybe even get our politician off their butts to realise this is a big problem)

http://www.actewagl.com.au/GreenChoice/home.aspx

I don’t know about other states but canberra’s normal energy provider just has a green option and it is simple to swap to it

europe and north america had a lights out protest five minutes of electrical down time for the planet: to all political leaders that global warming is an issue that needs to come first and foremost in political debate. (Australia is of course a bit behind and has had nothing like this yet)

It is pretty crazy times that the world has to go through such dramatic change of action and thinking to reserve the damage we have done… I just think its exciting we can make a difference by just thinking about what we are doing now and making simple changes

with lots of love to see the world better when i’m 50 :)

Sampler Column #1: Heyday Fashion

For a while now, we’ve had an arrangement with the lovely people over at The Sampler where they send us lots of cool samples, goodies and promos from indie crafters, record labels and zines from the world over. In exchange we offer the contributors a bit of free publicity in our magazine (stay tuned for our upcoming issue 13, for the column called “lipsters are doing it for themselves”).

Sadly there’s not enough room to feature them all, so I’m starting a weekly blog column, updated every Thursday, to help promote these wonderful creative people and their wares. And you, dear readers, get a chance to win every item we feature here on the blog.

Our lucky first Sampler contributer is…
Heyday Fashion
.

We discovered these funky hand crocheted earrings in our very first Sampler, crafted by designer Denise Cozzitorto.

To win this pair of earrings, email us and tell us what about the most interesting, beautiful, ugly or weird crocheted item you have (or used to have) in your house. Responses will be posted in the comments section, but don’t worry, we’ll keep your email details to ourselves. Send in your response by midnight Wed 8 Feb. The winner will be picked at random.
