The Sticks really remind me of some of Mum’s old music she listens to around the house (much to the annoyance of my dad and brother!). I’d say their sound was somewhere in the vicinity of funk/blues/rock.
But basically, if you like Jet, Wolfmother or even some old school rockers such as Led Zeppelin or the Hoodoo Gurus then you’re sure to like The Sticks.
They have funky guitar riffs mixed with catchy lyrics that are sure to get you tapping your toes.
Hailing from Melbourne the boys (Bernard, Paul and Nick) have released their self-titled EP The Sticks with four amazing tracks on it (my personal favourite being “Do”).
I suggest you head to a gig nearest you soon to check them out!
If you like electronic/rock/dance mixtures of music then you’ll more than likely enjoy The White Rose Movement. They have a hint of that 80’s synthesised rock as well as a splash of a Joy Division sound about them, thanks to vocalist Finn Vine’s awesome British accent, that just oozes through when he sings. I personally enjoy that, mostly because it reminded me of countless days of dancing around in our lounge room, when I was about four, in my brightly coloured ‘happy pants’ (but that’s another story). They also have a unique sound that you really don’t come across in these treacherous times full of American RnB and Hip Hop, so it’s a fantastic and refreshing change.
For National Youth Week, the ACT Writers Centre and lip magazine are running a workshop for aspiring young writers (aged 15 to 21) who are interested in advice about how to get articles published in magazines.
The workshop will cover:
o gaining the confidence to call yourself a writer o the craft of writing o what to write about and how to find ideas o the importance of editing o presenting a professional manuscript o finding the right markets o dealing with editors o developing a personal portfolio
Participants will have the chance to fire questions at a panel of real live editors from local magazines at the end of the workshop.
It was so much fun reading all the creative ideas that came through in last week’s comp. I can’t wait to try some of the projects posted! The retro earrings go to Nicole - but feel free to keep posting your creative recycling projects. Share the love!
Or feel the love from Enamor - she loves to capture things that people normally wouldn’t see with the naked eye.
To win this lovely birdie pendant, tell us about something you didn’t notice at first glance, but once you saw it, you knew it was something special.
It’s a good thing I don’t have to actually choose the Sampler competition winners, as there were some really great responses for the Batches o’ Patches comp. This week’s winner is Sarah.
Our next prize comes from tomate d’epingles. Recycled jewellery? How eco-chic!
You can win these fun retro hoop earrings by sending an email to michelle@lipmag.com, and tell us about something innovative you’ve made from recycled materials. Entries close midnight 14 March.
Late last year I blogged about the competition run by Dove so that real women could make ads for Dove about real women.
The winner, 22-year-old Lindsay Miller from California, in her ad sings into a pink hairbrush and dances in the shower. “Thinking about beauty and what it means to me … and to me it’s when I’m doing the ridiculous things that I’m doing.”
You can read more about it here and watch the video below or, if it doesn’t work, watch it here.
So, what do you think? Is the ad successful in depicting real women? (I do like the tag line)
Not much in the way of competition in our last Sampler comp, so Emily walks away with the Gifts Define Ladybugs Hairclip.
Keeping in with the theme of cute brightly-coloured accessories, this week’s comp is for this Batches o’ Patches by FredFlare.com. Their online store is named for Fred Astaire, as they believe that great design should be as fun as an old musical or a modern music video.
To win, tell us about something in your life that needs patching up. Could be your favourite jeans, could be a friendship. Email michelle@lipmag.com with your answer by midnight Wed 7 March.
