Supporting Feminist Dialogues

The Brisbane International Feminist Conference 2008 aims to further feminist dialogues about the status of women and the continued violence against women and children as human rights violations. Conference organisers believe that the status of women in Australia, and indeed globally, has been on the decline in the last decade.

The 2008 International Feminist Conference’s overall goal is to provide a forum to bring feminist thinkers, researchers, academics, service providers and community women together, to share information about pressing violations against women and children.

Raising money for ACT Rescue and Foster

click to enlarge“Princess Pissy Pants The Greedy Cheese Eating Bitch and Other Naughty Dog Tales” is a stand up comedy show all about the important place our pets hold in our lives… Dogs lick the tears off our face and in return we carry their poo around in a bag - now that’s friendship!!

Australian stand up comedian Joanne Brookfield and her beloved German Shepherd-cross Murphy spent twelve years together getting up to all sorts of mischief. Stealing food from housemates, scaring pizza delivery boys and hiding in the shower on Christmas Day …sometimes Murph would even do the same.

But this isn’t a show about “have you ever noticed how dogs are different to cats?” It’s about bigger things - life, death and how much Joanne despised carrying poo around in a bag. This “vigourously feel good show” (-The Age) celebrates the amazing bond we are able to form with an entirely different species and is touring nationally in September this year.

While in Canberra, the show will be raising money for ACT Rescue and Foster (ARF), a non-profit organisation who rescue dogs from euthanasia, and foster them until they can find permanent, loving homes. Since forming in 2001, they have already rescued and rehomed around 1500 dogs. There’s more info about them at www.fosterdogs.org.

Who’s your favourite author?

Britons love Enid Blyton most of all, according to a new survey. Britain’s Costa Book Awards has released a list of Britain’s top 50 best loved authors.

Enid Blyton is at the very top of the list, thanks to her classic children’s stories featuring adventures, fairies, woodland animals and midnight feasts.

The next couple of places were also snagged by children’s authors, with Roald Dahl coming second and J.K. Rowling taking out third.

Other authors on the list include Jane Austen, Marian Keyes, Charles Dickens, Beatrix Potter and J.R.R Tolkien.

Now, I know that I at least have read something by all of these authors, and I bet a lot of lip readers will also be familiar with at least some of their books. What sort of a childhood is complete without The Tales of Peter Rabbit, how many people didn’t get swept up in the Harry Potter phenomenon and where would we be without Mr Darcy?

But thinking of our own literature, who would take out the top spot in an Australian list of best loved authors? What books have a place in our hearts?

I’m going to suggest Ethel Turner as a good candidate… I still cry when I read Seven Little Australians. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on this, though. Who is your  best loved Australian author?
