‘the tree’ giveaway

The Tree, directed by Julie Bertucelli and closing film of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, is a testament to the healing powers of nature and the human heart.  A French-Australian production, The Tree follows Dawn (the ever-ethereal Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her family, in the year after her husband’s death.  Her young daughter, Simone (Morgana Davies), has come to believe that she can communicate with her deceased father through a huge fig tree in the family’s backyard, which helps her healing process – until the tree must be cut down, because its roots are interfering with the house’s foundations.  To make matters worse, the bearer of bad news is the plumber George (Marton Csokas), who falls for Dawn and threatens to change all of their lives.

The Tree moves between magic-realism and realism, not limiting itself to just one style of expressing emotion.  Despite elements of the supernatural, this is a delicate film that never feels untrue.  Both Charlotte Gainsbourg and Morgana Davies turn in beautiful performances – The Tree is not to be missed.
