lip is pleased to announce the launch of our online book club! We know how difficult it can be to faithfully attend one in real life (and when you do you are often sidetracked by discussions about anything else but the book) so we figured an e-book-club would be a handy portal for you to discuss some amazing novels.
The first book selected is Thérèse Raquin by French writer Emile Zola. Don’t be intimidated by the fact it was written in 1867, the novel is more twisted than a 90s Melrose Place storyline, but with a much more eloquent and haunting script. It is only 240 pages long, so it doesn’t require a large level of commitment.
Thérèse Raquin concerns the titular young women who is married to her sickly cousin, Camille. She lives with him and his domineering mother, and is sinking further and further into depression. But then she falls in love with Camille’s friend Laurent. The two desperately want to be together, and hatch a plan to murder Camille.
Thérèse Raquin is about desperation, guilt, punishment and the ugliness and obsession of passion (after all, passion comes from the latin patio - to suffer). While the themes are quite intense it has awfully beautiful, enthralling language to devour it all in.
The lip staff will be reading the book alongside you over the next month, and then we’ll share some of our thoughts and questions. So grab a copy of the book (below is some info of where to get it from) and we’ll see you in exactly a month, ready to discuss, debate and analyse away.
Thérèse Raquin has been released as a Popular Penguin (the orange and white covers) and is $9.95 at major book and department stores.
You can also order editions from $6+ at The Book Depository
