in brief: angelina jolie to have more preventative surgery for cancer

Untitled

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is set to undergo more surgery to reduce her risk of cancer.

The 38-year-old underwent a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction last year, after being diagnosed with the gene BRCA1 which put her at an 87 per cent risk of developing breast cancer.

This risk was much higher than the average 65 per cent risk of cancer growing, Jolie wrote in the New York Times after her procedures.

‘I do not feel any less of a woman,’ Jolie wrote.

‘I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.’

Jolie also has a 50 per cent chance of ovarian cancer, which she has decided will be the next item on the agenda.

‘There’s still another surgery to have, which I haven’t yet,’ Jolie told Entertainment Weekly

‘I’ll get advice from all these wonderful people who I’ve been talking to, to get through that next stage.’

Her decision to undergo preventative procedures is largely due to her own mother’s death from cancer at age 56.
