The Disney Channel has featured its first same-sex couple.

The family sitcom Good Luck Charlie features a family preparing for a play date. Pre-school aged Charlie is having a visit from her friend Taylor. Charlie’s parents a bit confused about who Taylor’s mum is, until they realise that it’s not Susan or Cheryl, it’s both.

The fact that Taylor has two mums is met by mild surprise, yet acceptance. As the first lesbian couple to appear on the Disney Channel, and one of the first in kid’s shows in general, this could be the first time that many children are exposed to same-sex couples.

‘This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,’ said a Disney spokesperson when the episode was announced last June. ‘Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.’

The episode is being met with approval by viewers across the globe. Evan Rachel Wood and ex-Disney star Miley Cyrus were just a few who tweeted their enthusiasm.
