The ugliest effing sweater and the Brisbane Fatty Clothing Swap

The ugliest effing sweater and the Brisbane Fatty Clothing Swap

By Sonya Krzywoszyja on 18 March 2012

I helped set up and attended the first ever Brisbane Fatty Clothing swap the other week. After some hassle of figuring out how to transport three very large garbage bags full of clothing (and the bags had rips all over them, from my kitten – a fact I didn’t realise until I’d gotten out of [...]

is it okay: to go to the shops in your pyjamas?

is it okay: to go to the shops in your pyjamas?

By Elizabeth Flux on 11 March 2012

It seems as though life is really a costume party. There is set appropriate attire for specific occasions, and deviation from these norms will be met with raised eyebrows and questions about your ability to understand what is ‘good and proper’. While to a degree this might seem all very 1800s-oh-Mr-Darcy-please-hold-my-parasol, the underlying ideals that [...]

8fourteen – corporate paedophilia or a harmless fashion campaign?

8fourteen – corporate paedophilia or a harmless fashion campaign?

By Kaylia Payne on 4 March 2012

As many of you know by now, I am extremely opinionated. To the point of being completely unreasonable sometimes. After reading Emma Rush’s piece, I was understandably on edge and ready to rip Witchery to shreds. After seeing pictures of the girls I was even more horrified; they look their age. Yes I have been [...]

miss voyager : the magic of melbourne

miss voyager : the magic of melbourne

By lip magazine on 1 March 2012

Melbourne is Australia’s answer to Paris. Actually, it’s our answer to almost everything. More sophisticated than Sydney, slicker than Brisbane and rougher than Perth, Melbourne is what you get when you throw artists, hippies and fat cats all in the one big multicultural bucket. But don’t take my word for it. Pack your most stylish [...]

Interview with Taryn Williams: How the Fashion Industry Can Empower Models

Interview with Taryn Williams: How the Fashion Industry Can Empower Models

By Erin Stewart on 28 February 2012

Taryn Williams became a model when she was 16 years old. She juggled her job with school, and later university, with a lot of success. She graduated the Dux of her high school and completed tertiary studies at the Australian National University. However, it was not easy going. She says, ‘I was modelling full time [...]

Most women I know hate buying bathers, and for good reason – most of the time it is a traumatic experience of feeling flesh pushed and prodded in the wrong direction, squeezing into bikinis that are labeled your size yet resemble a handkerchief amongst your flesh, or being lost in a sea of unflattering designs [...]

purse n’ boots: the magical handbag-shoe to make your social life better

purse n’ boots: the magical handbag-shoe to make your social life better

By lip magazine on 12 February 2012

I don’t really “go out” anymore. Since aquiring a full-time job and spending my entire wage on multiple soy lattes via drip feed and enormous rations of Charlesworth nuts that would put a squirrel to shame, I can’t afford it (weirdly) and am way too exhausted. I’m not missing out on much. Bacardi Breezers and indie-pop are [...]

fashion : the ever-changing industry

fashion : the ever-changing industry

By lip magazine on 7 February 2012

Earlier this week it was announced that Phoebe Philo, of the obscenely popular (and rightly so) Celine label, is skipping the runway this season due to her pregnancy. This means that instead of the whistles-and-bells laden runway presentation that most labels produce, Celine will host a scaled-back private presentation of the newest collection. While firstly [...]

working girls, show us a picture: you gotta look the part

working girls, show us a picture: you gotta look the part

By Emma Koehn on 19 December 2011

I’m stumbling through a chain store in the thick of late night shopping. Katy Perry’s voice pours through unseen speakers, stands of accessories jump out at me from thin air. Mirrors are fixed to the walls in a way that makes you slightly nauseous, with multiple copies of yourself staring back at you from behind [...]

makeup and femininity

makeup and femininity

By Sonya Krzywoszyja on 18 December 2011

There was a recent article on Xo Jane that talked about women, makeup and men’s perceptions of women and makeup. It reminded me a lot of this comic I’d seen circulating around on tumblr (see featured image). I laughed, but also felt annoyed. It’s true; I’ve experienced this before from the men in my life [...]

    FEMALE PERCEPTIONS PROGRAM

Every woman’s got one, but what exactly should they look like?

We are conducting a study to examine women’s perceptions of normality and abnormality in a very personal part of the anatomy - women’s genitalia. Taking part in the study involves viewing a range of images of women’s vaginas.

Understanding women’s opinions of what is normal is vital to help understand and promote positive body image. We are seeking women between 18 and 30 who are willing to give us half an hour of their time. Note that the study involves viewing and rating a series of explicit images.

This study forms part of a PhD research project being conducted at The University of Queensland. The study has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the School of Psychology.

If you are interested in taking part in this confidential study please contact Claire on 04000 65945 / c.moran1@uq.edu.au, School of Psychology.
