why magazines publish

By Michelle on 1 May 2008

I read Seth’s blog almost every day, and today he makes an interesting point about why businesses produce what they do and why they want us to buy their products. He uses film in his example, but I think this is also extremely relevant to magazines. The first reason is “me-centric” and explains that (commercial/mainstream) [...]

Cherry Hood

By Tessa Muskett on 23 March 2008

I have always been annoyed at the predominance of the objectification of the female form in art. Even today. Not because it is condescending to women but because it is not socially acceptable for the male form to be treated in the same way. People walk down the street with Kate Moss on their shirt [...]

gap years and work experience

By Michelle on 4 March 2008

So, you’ve taken a year off before uni… to travel or to work and save money so you’re not trying to subsist on measly Austudy payments and handouts from mum and dad. Or you’re looking to gain some valuable work experience in your area of study – which isn’t a bad idea, as you’ll soon [...]

No wonder they treat us as sex objects…

By Bree Roberts on 13 September 2007

Considering our recent discussions about lad’s mags, I found this article in The Guardian particularly interesting. “…It is no wonder a lot of men now genuinely believe that women want to be treated as sex objects. Who could blame them when so many of us have internalised an exhibitionistic ideal of our own objectification?” – [...]

Lad mags and consent

By Michelle on 12 September 2007

I commented recently about the issue of consent around the submission and publication of photos of women’s cleavage in Zoo’s competition. It appears lad mags like Zoo and FHM have little regard for this concept, but maybe this will change after courts yesterday found FHM guilty of publishing a photo of a topless 14-year-old without [...]

what do you think of the glossies?

By Michelle on 7 September 2007

Natasha Hughes at SMH asks: Is it really worth buying the glossies… or are they a bit of a disappointment once you get them home? http://blogs.smh.com.au/lifestyle/beautybeat/archives/2007/09/bag_the_mag.html?s_rid=smh:top5 From the comments, it seems many readers agree: “I stopped reading fashion and beauty magazines when i was 20 years old and my self esteem rose significantly.” “I work [...]

A necessary evil

By Michelle on 23 July 2007

Despite how we feel about advertising in general (and I’m not just talking about the objectionable, sexist, exploitative ads that are so prevalent in the media), we have included some ads on this blog and on our website to help us raise much needed funds to keep bringing you lip magazine in print. A free [...]

Jane says… goodbye

By Michelle on 12 July 2007

In a wave of magazines ceasing publication of late, Jane magazine is the next to close its pages for the last time, with its final issue to be published in August. Jane was designed to appeal to women who are irreverent, and “delivered the second-wave feminist editorial mission of Sassy”, Jane’s little sister, which folded [...]

    FEMALE PERCEPTIONS PROGRAM

Every woman’s got one, but what exactly should they look like?

We are conducting a study to examine women’s perceptions of normality and abnormality in a very personal part of the anatomy - women’s genitalia. Taking part in the study involves viewing a range of images of women’s vaginas.

Understanding women’s opinions of what is normal is vital to help understand and promote positive body image. We are seeking women between 18 and 30 who are willing to give us half an hour of their time. Note that the study involves viewing and rating a series of explicit images.

This study forms part of a PhD research project being conducted at The University of Queensland. The study has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the School of Psychology.

If you are interested in taking part in this confidential study please contact Claire on 04000 65945 / c.moran1@uq.edu.au, School of Psychology.
