SFF Screening: Sun 17 Jun 10:00 AM Event Cinemas 4 George Street

Film Synopsis: Marina Abramovi?’s blockbuster 2010 exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which drew over half a million people, forms the backbone of this fascinating documentary on the radical performance artist’s life and work. In his feature-length debut, filmmaker Matthew Akers follows the preparation for the mammoth show as he tracks Serbian-born Abramovi?’s 40-year career, including her collaboration with one-time lover Ulay. The exhibition’s centrepiece consists of the artist seated at a table, slowly lifting her gaze as audience members one by one take the opposite chair. The hard-working and photogenic Abramovi? performs this every day of the three-month exhibition, inducing an array of emotions from the individual participants and milling crowds. It’s to the filmmaker’s credit that the simple directness and profundity of the moment shines through in this eloquent film.

SFF Screening: Sat 16 Jun 11:45 AM Dendy Opera Quays 2 Cinema

Film Synopsis: Maverick Indonesian director Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) creates a dreamlike and poetic world in Postcards from the Zoo, a sensual adventure at once unsettling and life-affirming. Abandoned in the zoo by her father when she was a little girl, Lana grew up surrounded by animals. Her life undergoes a radical change when she meets a handsome cowboy who appears to have magical powers. Lana falls in love, and is emboldened to leave the safety of the zoo. When a trick goes wrong, Lana ends up alone, all the while longing for the zoo and the wonders she had come to accept as part of life. Soon Lana makes a pivotal decision to search for a place she can call home. Combining innocence and vulgarity in trademark Edwin fashion, Postcards from the Zoo is as disturbing as it is charming.

SFF Screening: Sun 17 June 6:30PM Event Cinemas 9 George Street

Film Synopsis: This doco is a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes with icon Tony Bennett as he records hisDuets II album, a multiple Grammy winner released on his 85th birthday. Tony’s meticulous approach has been honed over 50 years in the business; it’s clear his aspiration ‘never to sing a cheap song’ has not faltered. Surrounded by family – including son and manager Danny – Tony welcomes his partners into the studio and patiently shows them the ropes. Australian director Unjoo Moon and cinematographer Dion Beebe capture the magic with style and verve, as artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, John Mayer and a blue-haired Lady Gaga (singing ‘The Lady Is a Tramp’) step up to the mic. The most poignant moment is a duet with a nervous Amy Winehouse, resulting in a magical performance of ‘Body and Soul’.
