q&a: the faults

Channelling that quintessential two-piece garage psych rock sound, The Faults have recently had their single, ‘Quarter’, released through General Pants Co. Major Label, and have played a smattering of shows around Sydney.

The duo chatted to lip about modest childhood dreams and, of course, rock ‘n’ roll.

Describe your sound in five words or less.
Loud, melodic, frantic, garage… toasty.

Was there a particular moment or artist that made you want to pursue music?
We both really enjoy live shows, seeing a live band always makes us hungry for music. For singer/ guitarist, Oli, it would have been the classic blues and rock’n’roll guys like Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan that led to guitar playing in the beginning. But also some other rad musicians like The Strokes.

Who are your influences?
We always enjoy a bit of old school soul or R&B for groovy times, Ray Charles and his big band kill it on some of the recordings we’ve heard, they are so tight! Again, The Strokes are a big influence as are bands like Tame Impala, the White Stripes and recently, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. We’re also both really into some of the low-fi surfy fuzz bands that are going around at the moment…

What was the first CD/record you bought?
This is something I wish I remembered, but I’m sure it was something ultra fantastic like the Backstreet Boys.

Where do you ideally want to be in five years time? Where do you realistically think you will be in five years time?
On the moon, but most likely, not on the moon (unless we make it big time and maybe we can pay someone to take us there).  But realistically in 5 years if we’re still playing together, we’d like to have someone carrying our gear for us. If we can ever play outdoors in the sunshine to a big crowd we think that’d be super cool too.

Who do you most admire?

Great writers are stupidly cool. Song writers, good novel writers etc. Anyone creative.

A song I wish I wrote/played is…
‘Denial Twist’ by The White Stripes. Lyrically brilliant, musically digestible and sounds crusty and yum.

I couldn’t live without…
Coffee and music.

The best advice I ever received was… if you turn your underwear inside out you can wear it for two days. (NOTE: advice not yet exploited)

When I was little I wanted to… have a bowl cut!

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Oli has rabid fried chicken urges after a few too many drinks.

Is there a question you’ve always wanted to be asked?
Yes: “hello sir, would you like a free jetpack that also produces beer?”

Check out The Faults and other great acts at Major Label!
