So yesterday we brought you the not so good news that cases of HIV are rising among Indigenous Australians and young people. Well, today yet another study has found increasing numbers of girls as young as twelve are testing positive for sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia. In light of such increases it pays to ask, what’s wrong with the system and why aren’t messages about safe sex getting through to young people?
Is mamming the new planking, but for a good cause?
Apparently ‘mamming’ is now a thing. This quirky social media fad, similar to previous activities such as planking, involves taking photos of your (clothed) breasts on things. You know, tables, ledges, photocopiers, cats. But unlike planking, this seemingly pointless fad may be for a good cause. The craze was started by New York marketing company creatives, Michele Jaret and Michelle Lamont, to raise awareness about the importance of getting an early mammogram test if you suspect a problem. ‘Mamming’ has joined the long list of social media stunts that claim to be in support of a cause, raising the question as to whether these kind of acts do make a difference or whether they are just ‘slacktivism.’
Teacher takes class for an excursion. To a strip club.
Ok, so this bro science teacher from Indiana (who is in no way comparable to Walter White) decided that it would be totes rad to take his class out on a field trip for one of the students’ birthdays. But this was no ordinary excursion. The 31-year-old teacher through it would be a blast to take the class to a strip club for the lols. It didn’t end well.
New Nerf guns for girls are pink and cute.
Finally! Nerf gun toys suitable for girls to play with without the shame of looking like a boy! My partner’s six-year-old daughter expertly informed me that it’s for girls because it comes in pink, purple and white, whereas the one for boys comes in blue and grey. The new range is called ‘Rebelle’ and features cute girl’s weapons such as the ‘Heartbreaker Bow.’ My inner angry feminist is not impressed.
