interview: dj havana brown (and giveaway!)
As the only female DJ in Australia to be signed to a major label, DJ Havana Brown is doing rather well for herself.
After supporting big international artists including Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls, DJ Havana Brown has just released an album titled Crave Vol. 5, and here at lip, we were lucky enough to get our hands on a little Q & A with her.
Q: Where do you draw inspiration from?
A: I create mixes that make me feel like hitting the dance floor. Essentially I love what I do and it really does not take me much to get inspired. I’m constantly researching new tracks, sounds and artists online and finding new songs that I love or that are somewhat different.
Q: If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
A: I would love to work with Janet Jackson, who is my ultimate idol, and also Missy Elliot. The mix of those artists would be crazy.
Q: Is there a particular song that takes you back to a memorable moment and what is it?
A: ‘Stand By Me’ by John Lennon. It’s a song that my mother and I share. It reminds me of when I was about 10 years old – young, naive and at a time when life was so easy, which is a wonderful memory.
Q: What’s your favourite “girl’s night out?”
A: I love staying in a hotel room with my girlfriends, having a mini fashion parade to decide what to wear while having a few drinks. We’d go out to dinner together at a nice restaurant before arriving at a club to dance all night long!
Q: 5 words to describe yourself?
A: Passionate, positive, creative, determined and hard-working.
Q: Tell us a bit about Crave Vol. 5 (released on Oct 29).
A: Crave Vol. 5 features 3 CDs with a mix of up-tempo R&B, electro-house and ol’skool. Some of my favourite artists from the compilation include David Guetta, Taio Cruz, Ne-Yo, Swedish House Mafia, Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas– it’s the perfect soundtrack to a girl’s night out..
Q: What’s next in 2011?
A: Lots of touring and working on my original music. Which you will hear very soon.
