q&a: boom! bap! pow!
Describe your sound in five words or less.
Vintage, eclectic, soulful, bright, ballsy.
Was there a particular moment or artist that made you want to pursue music when you were growing up? Who were your early influences?
I remember a particular moment early in my childhood when I fell deeply in love with music – my Mum was playing the piano and singing ‘Killing Me Softly’ by Roberta Flack. I had absolutely no idea what the song was about, and for that matter, never really noticed my Ma playing piano as it was just always something she did so the sound of it filling the house was taken for granted. But, said moment and song was definitely a pivotal point musically for me.
What are your other interests/passions?
Working with underprivileged and special needs people, fighting for humanitarian equality, animal welfare, the ocean, outdoors, spending time in the country, ornithology, wine and family.
Who do you most admire?
My late grandmother, Hazel Wallace. She was an incredible, selfless woman, who devoted her life to helping others. Nan was also a proficient pianist and violinist and was always singing or humming something soothing and gorgeous.
Greatest achievement to date?
My life, to date. Massive achievement! 😉
A song I wish I wrote/played is…
Blowin’ in the Wind – Bob Dylan.
I couldn’t live without…
Chocolate Banana Bread…mmmmm
The best advice I ever received was…
Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground. Cheers Da 🙂
Do you think the music industry treats female musicians differently to male musicians? Do you think it’s more difficult for women to establish themselves?
I think as a female in the music industry you have to work harder to assert yourself and earn respect. But generally, it’s the same hard slog for all musos to find their feet and make their mark.
Is there anything you’ve always wanted to be asked?
Who out of the boys in Boom! Bap! Pow! has the most annoying habit?
Then I would answer ‘David’. He passes out on the couch after every show on tour, fully suited up, snores like there’s no tomorrow and then, 15 minutes before we’re due to leave for the next show (after waking from his Nanny nap on the couch…again!) Says “Oh man, my clothes stink! Has anyone got a spare shirt I can borrow??” ARRRRRRGGGGGHHH 😉
Boom! Bap! Pow! will be launching their new double A-side, Never Mean Nothing/Furniture, in a smattering of east coast shows this week. Catch them at Sydney’s Kings Cross Hotel on Nov 24, or Melbourne’s John Curtin Hotel on Nov 25 – check out the facebook event page for the details!
