q&a: owl eyes
At only 21 years of age, Brooke Addamo (aka Owl Eyes) already has quite a CV under her belt. She’s supported acts including The Wombats and Darwin Deez, has enjoyed high rotation on Triple J (as well as a couple of spots in their 2011 Hottest 100), and the clip for her catchy-beyond-catchy song, ‘Raiders’, has over 90,000 hits on youtube! Whew!
Lip was lucky enough to have a quick chat to the lovely Ms Addamo about her involvement with The Line campaign, and what she’s got in store for 2012.
Describe your sound in five words or less.
Pop. Atmospheric. Layered.
How did you get involved with The Line? Could you explain a little about your role as ambassador? Why is it an important campaign?
I got involved because I feel that it can relate to everyone it’s something I feel strongly about and am honoured to spread the message of ‘respect’ on behalf of The Line.
Several media outlets have touted you as someone to watch in 2012 – what do you have planned for the year?
I am busy at the moment working on an album so that is the main focus of the year.
How is the process of writing an album different to writing an EP?
It just feels different, you put more pressure on yourself but in reality it’s just what I have been doing already but just on a bigger scale.
What do you love most about performing?
I love the feeling and rush that you get when you get off stage so much adrenaline is running through your body, but at the moment my favourite thing is seeing people sing my lyrics. It’s an indescribable feeling.
Who do you most admire?
I admire my parents a lot for always supporting me 110%
A song I wish I wrote/played is…
‘Daniel’ – Bat for Lashes
I couldn’t live without…
Sugar
The best advice I ever received was…
Always stay true to yourself
Do you think the music industry treats female musicians differently to male musicians? Do you think it’s more difficult for women to establish themselves?
Hmm I don’t think so, I think the Australian music industry is coloured with many very talented female artists at the moment and I am proud to be a part of it. For some reason there is always going to be a higher ratio of boy in bands to girls, but we are up there and standing strong.
Is there anything you’ve always wanted to be asked?
Not really I still find it strange and also flattering in a way that anybody would like to read questions and answers about me!
Make sure you keep up with Brooke on her facebook page to find out what’s she’s up to. Watch the video for Owl Eyes’ ‘Raiders’ below!
