Frocks, feathers and fashionistas
If you’re fond of elegant, quirky fashion drawings, you’ll love Charlotte Brunskill. Her stylised images of stretched out, leggy girls, all draped in luxurious frocks and creative haute couture, are both effortlessly chic and unapologetically fun, showing a joyful appreciation for the play and imagination of fashion.
Charlotte’s experience as a makeup artist puts her close to the action of the fashion world, and her sharp eye for trends translates to the page in her cute and slightly kooky drawings. Sleek, fluid linework contrasts sharp joints with smooth curves. Shoulders and elbows are emphasised, so that the girls seem to be all long, languid limbs.
And they have attitude of sleek, confident fashionistas as well as the look. You can just see them strutting down the runway. In their flowing, liquid dresses, sharply structured jackets and incredible tough-girl boots, they seem to slink across the page, eyes hidden behind sunglasses or heavy fringes.
The fashion world can seem cold and alienating to some, but Charlotte bold, vibrant colour palette brings in a bit of a quirky touch that I quite like. Using bright, flat colours, there is a sense of fun and confidence that comes through as much from the aesthetic treatment as the attitude of the girls in the pictures themselves.
Then there’s the playful fashion choices in some drawings, like the gorgeous, structured, feathered number. It shows a real love for the whimsical and creative possibilities of fashion that isn’t afraid to step outside the lines.
Charlotte’s illustrations regularly appear in the UK’s Suit Yourself magazine. Check out her blog for more of her work!
