if it’s not PMS, it’s being pretty…
Well, we all know that society likes to promote a certain image of women. The idea that women are vulnerable, sweet, soft and nurturing has long been perpetuated by popular media and society at large. However, another image of women exists, that of the angry-woman, the ‘ball-buster’ or the ‘bitch’. Now, if all women are sweet and docile, how can we explain these odd streaks of anger?
Well, the PMS myth has been thrown around a lot (women can be angry, but only for 7 days of a month, and that’s because they can’t help it. It’s part of how they make babies), but now the University of California has come up with a new one. BBC news reported that a survey conducted by the university shows that women who consider themselves attractive are more likely to be angry, or display ‘war-like’ qualities.
That’s right. Pretty girls can be mean. And, according to the study, blonde girls are not only prettier than brunettes and redheads, they’re also meaner. Once again, rather than acknowledging that women, much like men, are individuals with the ability to think and feel differently, the entire gender is being assigned traits based on same kind of arbitrary measuring stick.
This makes me angry. And I’m not even that pretty.
