in brief: most hated man on the internet arrested for revenge porn site
Creator of a ‘revenge porn’ website, Hunter Moore, has been charged for reportedly stealing nude photographs from hacked email accounts and then posting those images online.
Moore was arrested by the FBI on Thursday, along with a second man Charles Evens of Los Angeles. The two men were charged with conspiracy, computer hacking, aggravated identity theft and aiding and abetting. According to the indictment, Evens was being paid by Moore for obtaining explicating photos which he would obtain by hacking hundreds of email accounts.
From 2010 to 2012, Moore ran the notorious website isanyoneup.com, which posted these explicit photos. Often the photos were submitted to the website by former lovers without the permission or consent of those in the photos. Moore’s site would then publish personal information of the persons alongside the photos.
Such antics earned Moore the title of “most hated man on the internet”. Given Moore’s previous justifications for his actions, it is easy to see why. In an interview with the BBC in 2012, Moore defended the website saying ‘I just monetise people’s mistakes that they made, and it’s kind of a shady business. But if that wasn’t me, somebody else was going to do it.’
Evens has entered a plea of not guilty, whilst Moore has not entered a plea. Both men remain in gaol.
