girls gone wild
Walking through your local shopping mall, you may have noticed in the windows of teen fashion stores, or on the bodies of the teenage girls shopping there, t-shirts emblazoned with slogans implying sexual favours the wearer may perform on some “lucky” young man (or woman).
This is not the least of what is currently termed “raunch culture” sweeping mass culture, both in America and here at home. Read the review of Arial Levy’s book Female Chauvinist Pigs or listen to Wednesday’s Hack program on Triple J**, and you will learn just how raunchy girls are becoming, claiming it is all in the name of sexual empowerment.
Rather than re-hash the issue – I think the above links cover it pretty well, especially as I haven’t yet read the book – I’d like to share some of the t-shirt slogans I’ve seen lately:
“Make me happy, take me shopping”
“It’s not cheating if we don’t get caught”
“Kiss me, my boyfriend’s at home”
If you have seen some slogans that have surprised, shocked or disturbed you and you’d like to share here, post them in the comments…
** In case they don’t upload the segment on the Triple J website, you can download the whole thing in mp3 format here (warning: file is 12mb)
