Lip Lit: Five Female Characters From Literature I Would Totally Hang Out With in Real Life.

Amy March from Little Women.

So I know we’re all supposed to hate her for being a brat and stealing Laurie, but she’d be the best March sister to be friends with. Meg would be the friend who is always agonising about being single or is completely obsessed with her boyfriend. Beth would be sickly sweet and completely boring (and you know, her dying would be depressing and all). And everyone’s favourite March sister, Jo, would be patronising, pretentious and insanely bossy (you might admire the babe, but you would’t want her on your speed dial).

Amy, however, would teach you how to curl your hair and make outfits on a shoe-string budget. Whenever you go out with her, she’d score you free drunks. She’d eventually marry some old rich guy, and when the invertible divorce happens and she gets a huge settlement (Amy would never sign a prenup), she’d treat you to a trip to Fiji. Amy March is the frivolous gorgeous good-time-girl we all need in our lives.

Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing.

Beatrice is the friend you were terrified of before you got to know her. Razor-tongued and fiercely independent, Bea would even put the Queen in her place. She’d do anything (including ordering your ex-boyfriend’s death) for you. Beatrice is the ‘oh, honey, no’ friend we – some of us more than others – desperately need around.

Esther Greenwood from The Bell Jar

Okay. Those of you who have not read it, know this: despite the obvious depression Esther goes through, she’s ridiculously smart and witty. She thinks and feels things with her entire soul, and this would make her a fascinating person. Sure, you might have to pick her off the bathroom floor some nights, but she’d give you enough insight into your own life that it’d be worth it. Esther is that sensitive, intelligent, slightly-broken friend that you’d share a bottle of red wine with and talk for hours on end.

Nancy Drew from the Nancy Drew Series

Nancy is that insanely poised, feisty, awesome friend that you can’t believe actually wants to hang out with you. But, uh, most importantly? SHE SOLVES MYSTERIES! And let’s face it, her single father is more than a little charming.

Nancy’s the friend that would bring excitement and intrigue to your life, but cares enough about you to never put you in any real danger.

And finally,

Bella Swan from Twilight.

This is purely for Bella’s benefit, not mine. Girl clearly needs someone in her life to pour her a big glass of wine and let her know she’s obsessed with her borderline abusive boyfriend. Bella is the girl you’re friends with, simply because she’s like a little lost puppy who needs to be rescued and cuddled.

Honourable mentions go to Scarlett O’Hara (only omitted from the list because she would try to steal my boyfriend/husband), Elizabeth Bennett, Sara Crewe, Jessica Wakefield, Novalee Nation, Claudia Kishi and Jordan Baker.
