ep review: the falls, hollywood
The debut EP of Sydney duo The Falls (Melinda Kirwin and Simon Rudson-Brown) was created at a time when most people would be screaming the house down and dividing up custody of the pet dog. Yep, that’s right, this duo broke up and made sweet, sweet music about their journey from coupledom to singledom and there’s not a sign of post-relationship hostility in this sweetly nostalgic EP.
For the most part the EP is reminiscent of Carol King and James Taylor with tunes befitting of a lazy Sunday at home in your jammies. The debut single ‘Home’, is one of the highlights with beautifully arranged strings and a toy piano that make you just feel with that little bit of joy and longing, especially if you are sitting in a packed bus at peak hour and are longing to be on thecouch with your love.
‘Million’ is the best track of the EP. The percussion (and by that I mean the stomp-box skills of Rudson-Brown) drives the pulse of this piece and completely drags you into the emotion of The Falls. However the surprise track is ‘Girl that I Love’. Remember that breakup I mentioned before? Well this is your fly on the wall insight into the how other people break up. The unexpected change in mood gives you some insight into the trials of the pair on their journey from lovers to friends.
The Falls have certainly given us a promising little taste of what is to come. Wearing their heart on their sleeves and putting all that heartbreak into music certainly has paid off for the pair. Let’s just hope they haven’t run out of material from their lives in which to pillage.
