q&a: chloe tully

Describe your sound in five words or less.
Poppy – Folk – Fun – Lyrical – Multifaceted

Was there a particular moment or artist that made you want to pursue music when you were growing up? Who were your early influences?
I didn’t grow up wanting to be a rock star… but as a kid I was listening to a lot of music from the 60s and 70s. I grew up on a cattle station in south-west QLD so I missed out on most of 90s pop music. All I had were these old tapes that my Dad listened to as a bachelor (Simon & Garfunkel, Dylan, The Eagles). As a teen I was listening to Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins a lot.

What are your other interests/passions?
Um, I have an unhealthy obsession with macaroons and owls. I like to draw and paint too.  And make little films.

Who do you most admire?
Celebrity? I admire Miranda Kerr.  A country girl who has gone on to be globally successful without losing the plot. Also, she wrote a book which I just adore.

Greatest achievement to date?
Recently I signed to Albert Music (publishing). They’re Australia’s oldest independent label. It’s crazy, on weekends I go in to their studios to write and there is ACDC on the wall. I feel incredibly lucky/spoilt to be part of the family.

A song I wish I wrote/played is…

Oooh, that’s a tough one! Pink Floyd : Wish You Were Here

I couldn’t live without…
Aside from the basic: food to prevent scurvy and a bit of love here and there…the one materialistic thing I can’t live without is my phone. I would have said ‘my guitar’ but there’s an phone app for that too…. 🙂

The best advice I ever received was…
‘Chloe Ellon, it’s important to always wear pretty knickers because you never know who might end up seeing them.’ – my Nanna

Do you think the music industry treats female musicians differently to male musicians? Do you think it’s more difficult for women to establish themselves?
I’ve never experienced sexism in my profession. Aside from the odd ‘girls can’t play guitar’ comments. That particular breed of man is simply intimidated. But the men I know in the music world are genuine and supportive of us females! So no, I don’t think it’s harder for women to establish themselves in music. We all have to put our nose to the ground and work hard in this fickle industry.

Is there anything you’ve always wanted to be asked?
“Would you like to sail around the world with me on my yacht whilst I feed you macaroons and massage your feet?”  said by tall handsome (preferably Irish) man.
