up & comer: nicholas costello
Guess what? We’re now profiling up and coming, or as-yet-undiscovered bands on Lip! If you’re a musician and want to get your stuff out there, email Zoya at [email protected] for more info with ‘Up & Comer Profile’ in the subject field.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m from Melbourne and grew up in the north. From an early age I was seemingly possessed/obsessed by music. I sung in choirs as a kid and eventually decided to pick up a guitar when I was 14. I’ve been writing songs ever since. I’ve been a member of several bands: Rainbeast, a punk rock band; Curtainfire, folk rock; and Siblings, an alternative pop-rock band, as a front man and chief songwriter. Now I’ve ventured out on my own. I recently recorded an EP, Grimelight, that marks the start of my solo journey and hopefully accurately reflects my musical perspective and persuasions thus far.
Describe your music for a new listener.
At the risk of sounding pretentious, I feel as though my music is relatively genre-less. It digresses between indie-folk, country, blues, folk-rock, alternative pop and prog. This makes it hard to describe or relate to someone (or something) else. You just need to go listen to it. As an introduction my music is predicated of vocally dynamic melodies, sincere lyrics and folky-bluesy guitar.
Where would you like to see yourself (as a musician) in 2 years time?
Simply: at Glastonbury, on stage.
What’s the best gig you’ve been to recently?
Passenger at the Corner Hotel. The front man was charismatic, funny and had a seriously cool voice. The band was super-tight and vibe was palpably warm and positive.
You can check out Nicholas’ music here. His EP Grimelight is available there for only $4! You can also follow him on Facebook for updates on gigs.
