The 2019 Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction is judged by Lip’s editors as well as our panel of esteemed judges.
Alison Evans is the award-winning author of the YA books Highway Bodies and Ida, and is a contributor in the queer #loveozya anthology Kindred. They like to write about strange ideas and queer people. You find them on twitter as @_budgie and Instagram as @alisonwritesthings
Danielle Binks is a writer, reviewer, book blogger and Youth Literature Advocate. In 2015 she won second place in the Rachel Funari Prize for her piece Fota. The following year she joined literary agency, Jacinta di Mase Management, as an agent. In 2017, she edited and contributed to Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology, of new Australian young adult writing – inspired by the #LoveOzYA movement – and released by HarperCollins. Danielle is a graduate of RMIT’s Professional Writing & Editing program, and holds a Bachelor of Communications from Monash University.
Melanie Joosten is a writer and social worker who lives in Melbourne. She is author of the novels Berlin Syndrome and Gravity Well, and the nonfiction essay collection A Long Time Coming: Essays on Old Age. Melanie’s first novel, Berlin Syndrome (2011) saw her named as a Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Novelist and awarded the Kathleen Mitchell Award for Young Writers. Berlin Syndrome was released as a film in 2017. A Long Time Coming: Essays on Old Age was awarded the People’s Choice prize at the Nib Waverley Awards and named the Australasian Journal of Ageing Book of the Year.

Background Information
This year marks the Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction’s seventh year. Writers were invited to submit previously unpublished and unperformed fiction up to 2000 words that engaged with the theme ‘fragments’. The competition was open to all women, female-identifying and non-binary writers.
This prize is held in honour of Lip’s late founding editor, Rachel Funari, in recognition of her contribution to the arts.
