in brief: birth photography is now a thing

In the UK, a bizarre new trend has taken hold of expectant mothers: birth photo-shoots.

Yes you can now hire a professional photographer to take pictures as you give birth to your new baby. It’s not surprising with photographers being present at all other momentous occasions such as weddings, birthdays and engagements, and now they are privy to the magical world of childbirth.

A sacred moment captured forever, a brand new baby and a glowing mother. A beautiful moment in any parent’s life. To be able to look back and relive those precious moments and even show your child their beginnings when they are adults and about to enter the world of smelly nappies and irregular sleep. Photos passed down to generations to come.

On the other hand, is this a breach of privacy, sharing the most sacred moment with a stranger and a camera lens? This moment which is meant to be shared between parents and a newborn baby (and medical professionals). Does the camera show a beautiful and glowing mother or a sweaty, exhausted woman? To the parents, a baby is perfect from those first moments, but will others see that beauty? Or just a red, crying baby that is a little odd looking? Would you at any age want to see a photograph of your birth? You and your mother so innocently exposed?

Would you as a mother want someone else in the room to hear you scream every swear word under the sun? Or would you even notice the extra person? This new trend will definitely have the public divided.

What do you think, Lipsters?
Would you be up for a mid-labour photo-shoot?
