One year ago I developed a rash after shaving off my pubic hair for a lover who dumped me with the words, “I was never attracted to you physically or sexually. I only ever liked you for your heart.”

The exhibition exposes Raunch Culture’s inability to accommodate for female subjectivity by citing this confession as the catalyst for a new installation of video, paper cuts, neon and printed text. Each work is a document betraying the schism between the sexy and the sexual, the glamorous and the grotesque, the ideal and the real.

I Only Ever Liked You for Your Heart is a discourse on how to prevail, demonstrating that Raunch can be inverted with the strategy of personal resilience and that personal ‘success’ can be incited by very public failure.

JESSIE ANGWIN has exhibited widely in Melbourne including at West Space, Platform2, Blindside, Bus, the Carlton Hotel & Studios, and Linden St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Art. In 2007 her work screened at C/O careof in Milan. Angwin is a member of the West Space Programming Committee and is currently completing a Master of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts.
