‘The Poetic Revolution’: A call for poets!
‘The Poetic Revolution’: An exposé of contemporary, underground poetry that explores the current renaissance of poetic expression in Australia, revealing how modern poets measure against the classics.
I’m asking why the poetry sections of bookstores are primarily filled with classical poetry and why we tend to reach for the classics first.
This comparative anthology aims to act as a showcase for genuinely contemporary poetry that reflects the current zeitgeist. The comparative aspect of this project transpires as a result of the modern readers’ tendency to prefer classical poetry to contemporary. I aim to highlight the parallels, piece by piece, that illustrate the way in which modern poets are equal in their mastery of the language whilst writing in a manner with which modern audiences can directly relate.
Melbourne being named the City of Literature by the U.N. is a clear indication that the time is ripe for the revitalisation of poetry in the mainstream, therefore I aim for this project to be the first of many, potentially developing into an ongoing series that will provide an avenue for emerging poets that has remained largely unexplored in the latter part of this century.
This will also provide educational institutions the options and means through which to source and teach genuine contemporary poetry, whilst offering the general public an easily accessible way and chance to relate to poetry other than classical, which directly reflects the world around them.
