the power of dance

the power of dance

By Kaylia Payne on 29 April 2012

From year eight until year ten I only ate intermittently. Of course, by year eleven it had gotten to the point where I had stopped eating all together. Needless to say I did not have a positive relationship with my body. I didn’t like it because it ran into things, couldn’t catch or throw, and [...]

the trouble with labels and subcultures

the trouble with labels and subcultures

By Kaylia Payne on 5 April 2012

When I read this article I was rather incensed. In fact, I emailed it to myself using the google subject line ‘TERRIBLE article- write against for lip ’ (and yes, I do actually leave myself smiley faces- professionalism at its finest). For those with no time to read it, the general gist is that the [...]

the ‘i did not report’ hashtag: stories of unreported sexual assault

the ‘i did not report’ hashtag: stories of unreported sexual assault

By Kaylia Payne on 28 March 2012

When I first heard about the ‘I did not report’ hashtag. I was blown away with the ingeniousness of the idea. How many of us have been groped against our will? How many of us have been harassed or threatened in the street simply because we happen to have a vagina? How many of us [...]

Confessions from a girl who doesn’t ‘get’ Visual Art: A review of the Paste-Up Project

Confessions from a girl who doesn’t ‘get’ Visual Art: A review of the Paste-Up Project

By Kaylia Payne on 18 March 2012

I have a confession: This morning I woke up in a cold sweat when I remembered that I was reviewing the first day of the Paste-Up Project (a You Are Here festival event that involves turning the outside wall of the Canberra Museum and Gallery into an open-air gallery). I called myself a variety of [...]

The ‘F’ Word

The ‘F’ Word

By Kaylia Payne on 14 March 2012

After reading Jamie Freestone’s article I turned to my husband, who, while I may be biased, is one of the most decent, caring guys around. “Are you a feminist?” I asked (or to be honest, challenged). “Um, ahh, well I believe in equality for everyone.” “But would you call yourself a feminist?” “I told you, [...]

8fourteen – corporate paedophilia or a harmless fashion campaign?

8fourteen – corporate paedophilia or a harmless fashion campaign?

By Kaylia Payne on 4 March 2012

As many of you know by now, I am extremely opinionated. To the point of being completely unreasonable sometimes. After reading Emma Rush’s piece, I was understandably on edge and ready to rip Witchery to shreds. After seeing pictures of the girls I was even more horrified; they look their age. Yes I have been [...]

can pinup and feminism go hand in hand?

can pinup and feminism go hand in hand?

By Kaylia Payne on 12 February 2012

I have a confession; one that I never ever thought I would share online, and especially not in the feminist mag that I write for. But at the beginning of last year I entered a pinup competition. Granted, I entered it before I had any real idea of what feminism was, and, like many people, [...]

When resolutions fail – starting the New Year with a bang, not a fizzle

When resolutions fail – starting the New Year with a bang, not a fizzle

By Kaylia Payne on 18 January 2012

I was always a big believer in resolutions. Not just on New Years either. Birthdays, the start of every season, the start of every month, and sometimes even just the beginning of the week would inspire me to write lists of what I wanted to change about myself. They almost always involved getting rid of [...]

travelling solo

travelling solo

By Kaylia Payne on 3 January 2012

From the 15th of January to the 1st of February I am travelling Europe solo; something that I have never done before. While I was expecting some concern, I never expected the barrage of criticism and advice that I have received over the last few months. I’m not naive enough to think that no woman [...]

h&m’s computer-generated models: what kind of message does this send?

h&m’s computer-generated models: what kind of message does this send?

By Kaylia Payne on 16 December 2011

The bodies of most of the models H&M features on its website are computer-generated and “completely virtual,” the company has admitted. H&M designs a body that can better display clothes made for humans than humans can, then “dresses” it by drawing on its clothes, and digitally pastes on the heads of real women in post-production.  [...]

    FEMALE PERCEPTIONS PROGRAM

Every woman’s got one, but what exactly should they look like?

We are conducting a study to examine women’s perceptions of normality and abnormality in a very personal part of the anatomy - women’s genitalia. Taking part in the study involves viewing a range of images of women’s vaginas.

Understanding women’s opinions of what is normal is vital to help understand and promote positive body image. We are seeking women between 18 and 30 who are willing to give us half an hour of their time. Note that the study involves viewing and rating a series of explicit images.

This study forms part of a PhD research project being conducted at The University of Queensland. The study has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the School of Psychology.

If you are interested in taking part in this confidential study please contact Claire on 04000 65945 / c.moran1@uq.edu.au, School of Psychology.
